You would not believe how long ive been googling for something like this. Went through 6 pages of Google results and couldnt find anything. One search on Bing. There was this…. Really have to start using it more often!

UPDATE ic_terms SET term_id=10 WHERE term_id=1 LIMIT 1; worked for me in WordPress 2.9.2, just had to re-add the category afterward.

This is a great hack but I just did it in WP 2.6 and found the names in phpMyAdmin were different. I made changes in the “wp_term” and “wp_term_taxonomy” fields. I don’t know if this is normal or not but it’s what I encountered and it worked fine.

Another thing I wanted to suggest is that for those who want to minimze their messing around in phpMyAdmin, instead of changing the way the posts connect to the categories in there just use the “Batch Categories” plug-in to change the posts in the category you’re messing around with to some other temporary category and then, once the changes are finished, use “Batch Categories” to change them back.
